If you are interested in becoming a New York Tutor and if you are certified public school teacher, check out Hublaub.com's Tutoring service. Perks of Being A New York Tutor
I have been a teacher and a tutor in different states, and I can say that New York is, overall, a great place to become a private tutor.
Granted, New York is a large state and there are certainly many counties and cities where tutoring won't bring in much bang for you buck. But, there are many others like New York City and Westchester County where you can make a very good hourly wage as a New York tutor.
I won't spend much time going over the some of the general benefits of being a tutor (like payment in cash ;) or the pesonal fulfillment you get from working individually with 1 student) but focus a bit more on what, in the end, separates New York--or at least many areas of new York--from many other states, and, in the end, it all comes down to socioeconomics.
New York state has many areas populated with people who are both affluent and who value education. If you just think about this statement, you might not need to read the rest of this article. After all, if parents have the money and value education, then it stands to reason that these parents will be ready and willing to pay tutors to help teach their children. From first hand experience, I can say that this is absolutely true .
So how much can a tutor actually make?
People often ask: "So how much can a tutor actually make? "? Again, this depends upon a variety of factors. I know some tutors who make about $200 an hour in Manhattan tutoring SAT prep. Not many people can pull this off. The average rate for a middle school tutor in Manhattan or Westchester right now (2009) is about $75 an hour and for high school is often closer to $125 an hour. Now, if you are a college student, you can't expect to make this amount-- you're probably looking at 1/3 that wage. And again remember it all comes down to socioconomics. If you're tutoring in Washington Heights, NY--a great area with a lot going for it but also an impoverished area--you won't be making anywhere near this amount.
In the near future, I plan on writing another article about how to actually become a tutor and make this money..but that's it for now. The moral of the story is: If you like teaching and you like kids, it is relatively easy to make some good cash as a tutor in many areas of New York. Lastly, for man of us who went into teaching, working with kids is very rewarding and private tutoring often brings even greater rewards because you only have 1 student to focus on and help improve--which is often much more attainable than having every student in a class of 25 succeed.
